Indigenous people throughout the world did not have access to all the modern medical technologies that people rely upon today. Indigenous healers learned to work with the forces of nature. American Indians of many tribes went on vision quests that involved going out into the mountains to fast for four days and nights without food or water. Many were given a vision and some received gifts of healing.
Many of the tribal doctors had developed exceptionally powerful healing abilities. These healings were facilitated by the various powers and beings that worked through the native doctors.
Ben Oofana was drawn to indigenous cultures from an early age and found himself living among the Kiowa Tribe in Oklahoma at the age of seventeen. Ben began his training with Horace Daukei, the last surviving traditional doctor among the Kiowa Tribe.
